Top 5 Value Stocks To Invest In Right Now

The Motley Foolhas been making successful stock picks for many years, but we don't always agree on what a great stock looks like. That's what makes us "motley," and it's one of our core values. We can disagree respectfully, as we often do. Investors do better when they share their knowledge.

In that spirit, we three Fools have banded together to find the market's best and worst stocks, which we'll rate onThe Motley Fool's CAPSsystem as outperformers or underperformers. We'll be accountable for every pick based on the sum of our knowledge and the balance of our decisions. Today, we'll be discussing Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) , the world's largest coffee-shop chain.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

    Industry ties
The company's management team has deep roots in the energy industry, specifically in oilfield services. President and CEO Gary Kolstad spent 21 years at Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) before joining CARBO, while Don Conkle, vice president of marketing and sales, spent 26 years at the same firm. No wonder Schlumberger is one of the top two customers for this proppant manufacturer. Both served in various roles at the company and are well versed in the ebbs and flows of the energy industry, which should serve investors well through the rocky environment of falling natural gas drilling activity.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Most of the selling last quarter took place in the energy sector -- and within it, no single stock got sold off as hard by funds as Schlumberger (SLB). All told, funds unloaded more than 4.57 million shares of the oil field servicer, a stake that's worth close to $430 million at current price levels. So, should you sell too? Not so fast.

Schlumberger is the biggest oil service company on the planet. The firm's revenues come from a menu of specialized field services such as seismic surveys and well drilling and positioning. In a nutshell, SLB's job is to pull oil out of the ground as efficiently as possible -- and with oil prices in freefall, SLB's value proposition matters more now than it did when crude was trading in the triple-digits. Oil firms turn to Schlumberger because the tasks they need to accomplish are too nuanced or proprietary to pull off in-house. And that gives the firm a deep economic moat.

Another part of SLB's deep moat comes from boots on the ground. Because Schlumberger is on-site at its clients' well locations, the firm is able to sell more complementary services at one time. The energy sector has gotten shellacked in the last few months, and frankly, that downward pressure isn't showing any signs of letting up. That said, SLB's revenues don't ebb and flow exactly in step with crude prices (unlike its clients), and shares look oversold here.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Investors waiting for Caterpillar (CAT) to turn into a butterfly will have to wait a while longer.

The maker of heavy machinery said profits fell 44% during the third quarter, while earnings-per share dropped to $1.45, well below forecasts for $1.68. Caterpillar also slashed its guidance for full-year earnings to $5.50, down from $6.50.

It’s fair to say investors were expecting more. In the days ahead of the report, share of Caterpillar had traded up to the top-end of the range they’d been trading in for the last six months. Instead, Caterpillar’s stock has fallen 6.2% to $83.69 at 12:43 p.m. today, bringing it back towards the low end of the range.

Caterpillar also had the misfortune to report on a day when investors are concerned that China could take steps tighten credit. And with Caterpillar’s exposure to emerging markets, that’s likely hitting shares as well.

Caterpillar’s dismal report is weighing on other stocks machinery companies.Terex(TEX) has fallen 2.5% to $34.37, Joy Global (JOY) has dropped 1.1% to $53.91 and Manitowoc (MTW) is off 1.9% at $19.36.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Joy Global have dropped 1.4% to $62.98 at 10:48 a.m. today, while Caterpillar (CAT) has fallen 0.3% to $108.25, Manitowoc (MTW) has declined 0.3% to $28.34 and Terex (TEX) is off 0.3% at $37.22.
