What was that about a blue chip slowdown? After a month of rocky returns for momentum stocks like Amazon, Netflix Netflix and other popular tech companies, those very names began to reverse their losses and surge into the green in Monday trading, leading the Dow and S&P to new highs and suggesting that investors haven completely retreated from momentum-driven names.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday trading at 16,695.47 for a gain of 112 points, or 0.7% a new record high. The S&P also closed at a record high: after gaining 18.17 points, or nearly 1%, it closed at 1,896.65. And while the Nasdaq did not finish the day with a new record high, it did close in positive territory: the index closed at 4,143.86, up 71.99 points, or 1.77%.
The biggest winner of the day, however, was the Russell 2000. The small-cap index was nearing correction territory defined as a loss of 10% from an index high and was down more than 8% since hitting an all-time high in early March. However, momentum from the Dow and S&P components carried over to the small cap stocks and lifted the Russell to 1,133.65 for a gain of 26.43, or 2.4%. Meanwhile, the CBOE Volatility Index, which measures investor uncertainty, fell nearly 6% to 12.17.

Why Altria?
The company is what's left after international operations were spun off in the form of Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM ) in 2008. While Philip Morris is favored by many because of lower tobacco taxes and regulations in many parts of the world, as well as the fact that many economies are growing more rapidly than ours, Altria still manages the very valuable Marlboro brand domestically, where it recently held a commanding 43% market share.

Argentina
The shale gas and oil resources in Argentina has the potential to really put the country at the forefront of the world's energy map. Not only does the country hold the fourth largest shale oil reserves, but it's also No. 2 in shale gas reserves. Investors looking to profit as the country develops these reserves could look at global giant Chevron (NYSE: CVX ) , which completed its first two exploratory wells into the Vaca Muerta formation last year, with another well currently being drilled. The company has three more appraisal wells planned, and given the vast reserve estimates for the country, this could be a big future driver for Chevron.

Big tech seems to get smaller and smaller, both in terms of sales and number of employees. International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) said it would rebalance its workforce. Texas Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ: TXN) announced it would cut 1,100 people. These announcements come shortly after Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) said it would fire 5,000 people. While job cuts from the recession may have ended, old tech cannot afford to hold on to its workers.

TR: Warren said something about them in the annual report two years ago, which is he gave them credit for having the capacity for knowing what is knowable and important. He often says investing is about knowing what knowable and important, and he gave them praise for having that skill. More recently he not only given them high praise but also substantially increased amounts of money to manage. And in addition, he credits them for increasing contribution across the organization into other areas of responsibility. So I would think that even though it would not end up to his portfolio credit, that Ted would have been very involved in the acquisition of ResCap. And I think the investment of ResCap is probably better off because of his ability to handle it. And I suspect that Todd may have had some contribution to Bank of America (BAC), which is a very important investment that Berkshire made, and for IBM (IBM), which was a big investment.

Yet one company looks poised to benefit in a big way from Iran. That company, the former largest company in the world by market value, is none other than Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) . Lately, Johnson & Johnson has presented two different faces to investors. On one hand, the company has faced the challenge of dealing with a weak consumer-products business, as multiple recalls and close regulatory oversight of its production facilities have exacerbated J&J's problems. With its more focused consumer-goods business, Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL ) has worked harder at taking advantage of international growth opportunities than many of its rivals, and Colgate's strong overseas sales, in comparison to J&J's international weakness, show the effectiveness of that strategy. In particular, Asia has been a focus point for Colgate, with revenue from the region having risen 9% year over year compared with less than 3% growth overall. Moreover, Latin America represents Colgate's biggest region for sales, with more than half again the revenue its U.S. segment produces.
