Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.
What: Shares of chemical maker Zep (NYSE: ZEP ) plunged 17% today after its quarterly results missed Wall Street expectations.
So what: The stock has rallied nicely in 2013 on steadily improving fundamentals, but a wide third-quarter miss -- EPS of $0.28 on revenue of $186 million versus the consensus of $0.42 and $197 million -- is forcing analysts to recalibrate their growth estimates. While management said that its diversification and expansion initiatives are right on track, weak demand and higher costs are weighing heavily on profitability.
Now what: Unfortunately for Zep bulls, management doesn't expect the operating pressure to let up anytime soon. "[W]e are currently experiencing organic revenue declines and expect this to continue over the next twelve months," said Chairman and CEO John Morgan. "We will therefore restructure the business to bring costs in-line with our revenue expectations and improve return on invested capital, while continuing to prudently invest in future growth initiatives." With the stock now off about 20% from its 52-week highs and trading at a forward P/E of 10, it might even be a good time to buy into that turnaround talk.

Stateside, Garmin (NASDAQ: GRMN ) is seeing many of the issues I project AutoNavi will soon encounter. With mobile coverage spreading into many rural areas, many smartphones and tablets are now able to deliver the same navigation quality and features that Garmin's and AutoNavi's products bring to the table. Understandably, China's wireless infrastructure isn't as developed as what we have here in the U.S., so the lifespan of AutoNavi's products will be extended compared to Garmin, which has been on a multiyear downswing. Ultimately, though, the same product replacement cycle is going to hit AutoNavi when China's wireless infrastructure improves, and will slowly erode its business.

Apple (AAPL) supplier TriQuint Semiconductor (TQNT) has been zooming this year with the stock up almost 60%. TriQuint share price received a boost after it announced a merger with RF Micro Devices (RFMD). Now, TriQuint is expected to release its first-quarter earnings report in April 23. Let take a look at what expected of the company and if it can sound out a good outlook.

Among holdings in which Graham Capital Management increased its stake was TriQuint Semiconductor (NASDAQ: TQNT ) . The stock recently received an upgrade to "buy" from analysts at Charter Equity, but my colleague Rich Smith thinks the stock is still overvalued. Anyone thinking the stock is on the rich side won't be happy about the company's stock-buyback plans. Its last earnings report was disappointing, but management sees better days ahead due to the introduction of many new products, along with a growing market.

Steve Halpern: So, for your specific recommendations in the semiconductor sector, you've initially taken positions in TriQuint Semiconductor (TQNT), Cirrus Logic (CRUS), and NVIDIA (NVDA). Could you tell us about those positions and the strategy that you're using with them?

Charter Communications, Inc. was founded in 1999 and is based in St. Louis, Missouri.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Harold L. Vogel]
For cable networks and distributors, first admire the long-term pricing power for cable services (shown in the chart below). Price increases have far exceeded the rate of gain of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for decades and thereby supported the stock prices and earnings growth of the entire industry (even though some companies such as Charter (CHTR) stumbled into bankruptcy even with this pricing wind at their backs).
- [By Sean Williams]
What specifically led both stocks higher today was speculation that Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR ) is on the acquisition hunt. According to CNBC, Time Warner Cable's CEO Glenn Britt has discussed the possibility of merging with Charter; however, CNBC also commented that Time Warner Cable isn't likely to pursue the deal. That still proved more than enough to send Time Warner Cable and rival Cablevision higher, as any M&A acquisition in this sector would only serve to improve pricing power for these broadcasting companies.
