Is It Time to Buy Viacom Stock?

For many, Viacom (NASDAQ: VIAB  ) stock has been a disappointment over the past year:

Should we expect more losses in the year ahead? I'm not so sure. And yet if the chart above shows anything, it's that investors prefer big-name franchise owners such as Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) and Time Warner (NYSE: TWX  ) . Viacom is still in the early stages of developing new properties to accompany Transformers.

Giant robot seeks friend
The company's partnership with Hasbro has been especially lucrative. Over four movies, Paramount Pictures' Transformers franchise has earned more than $3.7 billion at the worldwide box office -- just over $750 million on average -- and another $682.9 million in home video sales before accounting for Transformers: Age of Extinction.

By contrast, Disney's Marvel Studios has managed to produce $703 million in average worldwide box office grosses over 10 movies. Giant robots (for now) are beating superheroes, which may explain why Paramount wants as much of director Michael Bay's time as it can get.

In July, the studio added three years to an existing agreement that gives Paramount first crack at funding Bay's newest projects. That includes a June 2016 follow-up to this summer's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which Bay helped shepherd through his production company, Platinum Dunes. Mikey, Leo, Raph, and Donny -- as the talking turtles call themselves -- have taken in $342.1 million worldwide as of this writing.

A howler of a franchise
While Paramount is a meaningful contributor to Viacom's revenue, Media Networks is what produces profits. Cable operations such as MTV and Nickelodeon account for two-thirds of revenue and nearly all of the company's operating income.

TV franchises deserve much of the credit, and at least one is heading for a bigger stage. In February, the animated inhabitants of Bikini Bottom will make their big-screen debut in SpongeBob: Sponge Out of Water, adding to a franchise that has generated at least $8 billion merchandising revenue over its 15 years on Nickelodeon.

Over at MTV, Teen Wolf has proven to be a durable performer and a favorite among the crowd at San Diego Comic-Con. Viewership tends to run between 1.5 and 2.5 million per episode. Season four's finale drew 1.54 million viewers on Sept. 8, leading the network to order 20 more episodes for season five.

While that might not sound like much, on last month's earnings call, Viacom chief Philippe Dauman explained the long-tail nature of this sort of cable programming:

Across Viacom's networks, total video consumption of our full episode programming has grown year-over-year, with a number of our series seeing dramatic lift when you factor in time-shifted and on-demand viewing. Take MTV's Teen Wolf for example, a show with a very tech-savvy audience, an entire online and social media culture onto itself. Live-plus-same-day ratings for the just-completed cycle of Teen Wolf were up 18% among all viewers over the show's debut season in 2011. But when you factor in all measured screens, the total audience of the show is up 38% over the same time frame.

Viacom stock could pay off over the long term
How soon we'll see Viacom's various franchise bets pay off isn't clear. In the meantime, investors can take heart knowing that the stock is cheap compared to peers. S&P Capital IQ has Viacom trading for 14.2 times trailing earnings and just 12.6 times estimated profits, versus 16.1 and 18.1, respectively, for Warner and 21.3 and 19.7, respectively, for Disney. Successful franchise bets could help to close the gap, delivering huge returns to current shareholders in the process.

Some observers of the independent broker-dealer universe might be tempted to explain its current state by counting the acquisitions that Nicholas Schorsch's Realty Capital has made over the past year. Acquiring Cetera, Investors Capital, J.P. Turner, Summit Brokerage Services (and Larry Roth) will give Realty Capital about 9,000 reps, roughly $200 billion in assets and some top-flight management.

One might be forgiven in thinking the BD trend is all about consolidation, but conversations with one BD president after another paint a different picture. While margins are thin and compliance costs are getting higher, 100% of the 58 BD presidents in our poll said they believe in the viability of the IBD model.

Large BD networks might provide some scale, and small BDs might not provide all the same services as the big boys, but as SSG President Dan Skiles says, “size doesn't matter anymore.” In a world of outsourcing, cloud-based systems and more competition in the advisor technology space, a “smaller firm can actually have better technology” than a larger firm burdened with legacy tech systems.     Air Lease is the second coming of Steven Udvar-Hazy. In 1973, Mr. Udvar-Hazy co-founded what became International Lease Finance Corp. (��LFC��, and in doing so established a new industry: leasing commercial aircraft to airline companies. He was successful both in concept and execution. ILFC, which is the world�� largest aircraft lessor, was sold to American International Group (��IG�� in 1990 for $1.3 billion. Mr. Udvar-Hazy remained CEO of ILFC until 2009, and retired from AIG in February 2010. By April 2011, he had engineered the IPO of a new aircraft lessor, Air Lease, bringing with him ILFC�� senior officers, who had worked for him there since 2002.

    The basis for this new venture appears to be the reluctance of AIG to invest in the business. The two largest aircraft lessors are owned by diversified financial companies, the 2nd being GE Capital, which, like other major finance companies, is shrinking its balance sheets. Yet, this is occurring at what seems to be an opportune moment to allocate additional capital to the business:

    And now let's take a quick look at some of the other stories that shaped our week.

    VeriFone (NYSE: PAY  ) shares tumbled 21% on Thursday, after the transactions enabler missed Wall Street's profit expectations and issued disappointing guidance. VeriFone wasn't very fun. TiVo (NASDAQ: TIVO  ) can't catch a break. The DVR pioneer was on the receiving end of a $490 million settlement, but the stock still took a hit because it was less than the market was expecting. Go figure. TiVo's intellectual capital alone has been enough to be awarded $1.6 billion in damages in recent years, but the company's enterprise value is a mere $1 billion. Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) is not the second coming of Webvan, but it is expanding its AmazonFresh grocery delivery service to Los Angeles. It's been testing the service fir years in select neighborhoods in its home turf of Seattle. JinkoSolar (NYSE: JKS  ) moved higher on Friday after reporting a 36% surge in shipments. Solar energy was out of favor last year, but some players are starting to show signs of brightening.

    Finally, we have TiVo (NASDAQ: TIVO  ) landing ahead of the prognosticators. The DVR pioneer posted a narrower loss than analysts were expecting. TiVo's adjusted deficit of $0.09 a share was a lot less red ink than the $0.14 shortcoming Wall Street was banking on. TiVo posted healthy subscriber growth on the strength of technology licensing deals with cable and satellite television providers worldwide, though it's easy to be concerned about the decline in higher-yielding subscribers to TiVo's namesake boxes.

LONDON (The Deal) -- European and Asian stock indices were mixed Wednesday, Sept. 18, as investors waited for the Federal Reserve to pronounce on the level of monthly bond purchases at the end of a two-day meeting later Wednesday.

Economists predict the central bank will scale back monthly purchases to about $75 billion from $85 billion, reducing the monetary stimulus even as some indicators suggest U.S. growth is stalling.

Germany's DAX index eked out a 20.81, or 0.24%, gain to trade at 8,617.76 by late morning, with HeidelbergCement leading gainers after Goldman Sachs analysts issued a buy recommendation. The stock rose 2% to €58.51 ($78.15 ). In the U.K., the FTSE 100 was up 1.1 at 6,571.38. Barclays (BCS) plunged 6.7% to 280.25 pence after earlier this week warning of a new 50 million pounds ($80 million) fine related to a 2008 Qatari fundraising and also of compensation payments to customers for miscalculating interest rates. It made the disclosures in a prospectus to market its planned 5.8 billion pounds rights issue.

    The mess in the Ukraine has spread to Western Europe. Germany led the region lower with a three percent loss this morning. The German economy is the largest in Europe and with their trading ties to Eastern Europe, it is not surprising to see the country falling on the news.     General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) reported cash and cash equivalents of $130.3 billion in September 2013, down slightly from $132.4 billion in June and $138 billion in March. Currently, GE offers its shareholders a dividend of $0.76 per year, or 2.8%. Early in 2013, it was reported that GE planned on buying back $10 billion of its stock from investors. The buyback was prompted by GE selling 49% stake in NBC Universal to Comcast Corp in March. In April, GE acquired the Texas-based oil company Lufkin Industries for $3.3 billion. Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) had a total of $80.6 billion in cash and short-term investments at the end of September. This was the fourth consecutive quarter of growth for the company that reported $77 billion in June, $74.4 billion in March, and $68.2 billion in December 2012. MSFT provides its shareholders with a 3% dividend, or $1.12 per year. In September, MSFT made headlines for its $40 billion stock buyback and 22% dividend increase.     InterDigital lost 7% after a judge ruled that Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) and China's ZTE had not infringed on wireless-transmission technology patented by InterDigital. InterDigital CEO William Merritt issued a statement after the decision, disagreeing with the decision, but suggesting that an appeal to federal appellate court might yield a better result in the long run. InterDigital has generally been successful in getting many companies to license its technology, with an agreement last week with Samsung having led InterDigital to revise its second-quarter revenue guidance upward. Still, with the stock trading at lofty heights, InterDigital needs all the revenue it can get to justify its valuation.

Southwest Airlines� (NYSE: LUV  ) will raise its quarterly dividend fourfold, the company announced yesterday, increasing it to $0.04 a share from the current level of a penny. Annualized, this amounts to more than $100 million.

The quarterly dividend will be paid on June 26 to shareholders of record as of June 5. The dividend marks Southwest's 147th consecutive quarterly dividend payment.

The airline operator also announced�it was increasing its existing�$1 billion�share repurchase authorization to�$1.5 billion, of which�an initial�$250 million�will be bought back on an accelerated basis. So far, $725 million in share repurchases of the $1.5 billion authorization have been completed since August 2011, reducing shares outstanding by more than 10%.
